I felt like her emotions were a bit extreme for the situation.

The acting is a bit overdone, for example there was no reason for her to drop her mouth while he was talking. It creates confusion because as a watcher I wonder why she dropped her mouth. I think animating a second character would have made it easier, as you wouldn't have had to compensate for having only one character. That is probably the reason you made her actions so over the top, because otherwise the scene would have seemed boring.
